There are so many ways to solve stress, pain, and anger. Drinking alcohol, smoking, and drugging on habituates are not on the list. I am
talking about healthy ways to help or manage these overlooked personal issues. Many of us are facing stress, pain, and anger issues on a daily bases. The problem is that we may not be dealing with them in ways to reduce the impact they may be causing. I see most people are looking for a quick fix, rather than going through some regimen to help reduce or stop the nagging issues. They would rather take pain pills or other prescription drugs which only mask the underlying issues than find ways to deal with them directly. I will share my experience of what truly work for me, which are exercise and meditation. I will discuss what exercises I’ve found helpful and why. I will talk about meditation and what you can do to find it helpful, before you hit the sack.

Exercises and their benefits

When I was in my early teens, I was very active. I was up to challenge anything. My peers used to be amazed at my strength. Because
of that I started lifting weights. I bought mats and gym equipments. Living in an apartment was not a good idea with free weights. The noise can be bothersome to the people at the bottom. I tried my best to be quiet. The first time I lifted weights, I was getting discouraged. That was because I was able to bench-pressed about 80 pounds. I was powerful enough to lift it off the safety bar, but not able to balanced it and completing a full rep. But as time goes on, my balancing technique got better. I had friends over and they were impressed with how much I can lift. After that, I felt better and want to make it a hobby. I was doing push-ups, chin-ups, sit-ups, weightlifting and jogging to keep my self busy in a big city like NYC. Going through H.S. was very scary at the time. Lifting weights and being strong made me feel
better.

Long story short, I signed up for the U. S Army and I rocked the exercises at boot camp due to my agility. I became a squadron leader as a result. The drill sergeant or instructor were eyeing my fitness level over all the rest of the enlistees. I felt I had an edge over everyone in my unit. It definitely worth it. Even though I was hurt in boot camp, exercising and staying in shape kept me from being afraid. But as I settled down in my combat unit overseas, I became injured severely. I’m talking about fractured leg, injuries of the shoulder, and possible frost bite. I still didn’t let that get in my way. I dominated the physical fitness level after recovering. I then went to back the states to complete my enlisted contract as agreed. My injuries at this unit got worse. I had head injuries, wrist, knees, ankles, and massive development of headaches. These additions were the downfall of my perfect physical fitness record. I reached a mental block with the unbearable pain. I was going to make it a career in the Army, but my sustained injuries were too much for me to withstand. I left the Army almost crippled after detaching from it.

I didn’t know how to treat my injuries but to take almost 4,000mg of Tylenol daily to relieved some of my pain. The pain and other problems were making me mentally unstable. Evey time they give me a blood test, the doctor would asked me if I was on any street drugs due to high liver level. I would reply, NO! But when I explained to her what I’m doing for my pain. She advised me to drop that to no more than 1500mg a day. I was not comprehending why. Keep in mind that I was not exercising anymore. I was hurt from head to toe. I saw doctors for headaches, pain, and other problems and I was put on many prescription drugs. I was not feeling any better from them. I was groggy when I wake up and was getting angry for not getting any better. They were just temporary fixed.

After years of taking prescription drugs, I did some deep thoughts. I started looking at videos about muscle groups. I found out that if you strengthen weak areas, not only they would be stronger, the pain would reduce over time. In doing so, my memory of when I was younger and how I had felt better about exercises, correlates with the videos about muscle groups. It was weightlifting that made me strong and fearless. I made up my mind to start lifting weights again to cope with my daily pain and mental condition. My garage became my gym. I invested in a power rack machine and leg machine. Little by little, my interests in weightlifting had gotten stronger. I exercised different muscle groups on a daily basis. After a few weeks, I was feeling better. I was getting in shape and the pain would subside week after week. My workouts were on a step by step basis as I see my endorphins go up and up. I finally made it a hobby. I even asked the doctor to drop my meds. I wanted to try herbs along with my exercises(as explained in the section of my experiments on herbs and their benefits). I didn’t want to deal with the side effects from the prescription drugs. My doctor agreed and I was happy. Today, I am more energetic than I have been in years. I can manage my pain better. I eat healthy and lift weights to keep myself from pain due to old injuries that can creep up on you. If I don’t exercise daily, it makes me feel agitated as I can feel the pain coming back. My exercises are the biggest part of my pain solution, along with herbs, meditation and proper diets.

Meditation and it’s benefit

Meditation was not on my list. I was introduced to meditation with one of my therapist. At first, I didn’t understand how it works. I
thought that you have to say some kind of hymns or have to hum my way with some rituals. But I learned that it is not like that if you don
want to. It was a relief to know that. Upon doing some research, I found my comfort zone on how to do it. First, I was not flexible to sit in
that crossed your leg position, no matter how hard I try. Keep in mind that I still have pain in my joints from old injuries. Doing them
repetitiously, made it easy for me to sit with my legs where the feet are in contact with each other.

After a few weeks of adjusting to the seating position as I meditate, I find that crossing my legs is not necessary. The whole point of meditation is to find that quiet comfort zone to relax and be less mindful. I didn’t have to say any hymns or do any humming in order do
the meditation. All I do is sit there for about ten to twenty minutes before bed and just relaxed as I imagine myself going into empty space
with nothing to see or think deeply about. I only see the darkness of space. I also hear nothing during the process of meditation. Sometimes, I feel that I’m in deep trance. Afterwards, I would bring myself slowly back to consciousness as I hear things around me getting louder. The
after effect of meditation has helped me to relax right before going to bed and has improved my sleep.
